  Abstract CONTEXT: Commonly used immunoassays are not free from interference, which can be a confounder in the interpretation of test results. We present a case with extremely high multiple hormone levels due to such interference. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 33-year-old woman with no specific symptoms had markedly elevated TSH with normal free T4 and free T3 levels. Repeated measurements revealed discordantly high TSH, ACTH, FSH, PTH, IGF-1, prolactin, beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, and calcitonin levels without the associated clinical pictures. The measurements were repeated with the same patient sample on four different analytical platforms using chemiluminescence immunoassays/electrochemiluminescence immunoassays, and the results were divergent on each platform. Serial dilutions of serum samples revealed nonlinearity, suggesting assay interference. All hormonal measurements were in the normal range when heterophile antibody blocking tubes were used. The serum of the patient was then subjected to polyethylene glycol precipitation. The post-polyethylene glycol recovery resulted in hormone levels in the normal range. The patient did not receive any medications and has been under follow-up without any signs and symptoms for 24 months. CONCLUSIONS: This report illustrates a rare case of falsely elevated hormone levels due to assay interference caused by heterophile antibodies. We point out the importance of a close collaboration between clinicians and the laboratory to avoid unnecessary clinical investigations as well as inappropriate treatments.

  Abstract Systematic investigations and phylogenetic analyses have indicated that Astelia, as currently circumscribed, is paraphyletic, with Collospermum nested within it. Further, A. subgenus Astelia is polyphyletic, and A. subgenera Asteliopsis and Tricella are paraphyletic, as currently circumscribed. Revision of the subgeneric classification of Astelia is warranted to ensure classification accurately reflects the evolutionary history of these taxa. Collospermum is relegated to synonymy within Astelia. Astelia is dioecious or polygamodioecious, with a superior ovary, anthers dorsi- or basifixed, pistillodes or pistils that have a single short or poorly defined style, a 3 lobed stigma, and fleshy uni- or trilocular fruit with funicular hairs that are poorly to well developed. Astelia subgenus Collospermum (Skottsb.) Birch is described. A key to Astelia sections is provided. Astelia hastata Colenso, A. montana Seem., and A. microsperma Colenso pro parte are resurrected and the new combination A. samoense (Skottsb.) Birch, comb. nov. is made.

  Abstract The genus Metrosideros (Myrtaceae) comprises 50-60 species, found largely across the Pacific Islands. The relationships within this genus, including the circumscriptions of the subgenera Mearnsia and Metrosideros and their relationships with the other members of the tribe Metrosidereae, namely the New Caledonian endemic genus Carpolepis and the South American Tepualia, are poorly understood. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out using previously published ITS sequences, covering most species of the tribe, and new sequences of five single-copy nuclear genes on a reduced sampling. The independent and combined analyses of the five nuclear genes using a range of approaches, including Bayesian single-gene, concatenated (MrBayes), concordance (BUCKy) and coalescent (*BEAST) analyses, yielded different topologies, indicating important conflicts among individual gene phylogenetic signals. The deep relationships within the tribe Metrosidereae remain poorly resolved, but our results indicate that the species of Carpolepis and Tepualia are likely nested in the genus Metrosideros. A broad circumscription of the genus Metrosideros is therefore adopted, and the new combinations Metrosideros laurifolia var. demonstrans, Metrosideros tardiflora and Metrosideros vitiensis are here published.

  Abstract Climate changes, sea-level variations, volcanism and human activity have influenced the environment of the southwest Pacific Islands during the Holocene. The high-resolution palynological analysis presented here concerns two specific levels (main lithological changes) of a well-dated Holocene core, Tfer06, collected from Emaotfer Swamp, Efate Island (Vanuatu). Our aim is to understand the role of climatic variability and human activities in shaping vegetation during these changes. Between 3790–3600 cal yr BP, the development of vegetation marked by disturbance is a marker of an increase in sustained El Niño events, also observed in many Asian-West Pacific areas. Between 1500–900 cal yr BP, the increase in introduced taxa and in microcharcoal particles is interpreted as human impact. In a forthcoming paper, the ongoing high-resolution palynological analysis of the whole core will be compared and integrated into regional palaeoecological data.

  Title Rhopalotricha, a New Subgenus of the Fern Genus Lastreopsis (Dryopteridaceae) Type Journal Article

  Abstract A new subgenus of Lastreopsis, subg. Rhopalotricha, is here described based on the results of our recent phylogenetic analyses. Its species differ from others in the genus by having a distinctive type of hair within the grooves of the rachises and costae adaxially. These are 1–3(–4)-celled and clavate, whereas the remainders of the species in the genus have hairs that are 3–12-celled and non-clavate. Subgenus Rhopalotricha also differs by having spores with broadly folded perispores with echinulate surfaces (vs. tuberculate or spiny, and with smooth surfaces). Subgenus Rhopalotricha occurs in the Neotropics, islands of the southwestern Pacific (Samoa, Fiji, and Vanuatu), New Zealand, and Australia. A key is provided to distinguish the species, each of which is treated with synonymy, description, geographic distribution by country, elevation ranges, and discussions. Lectotypes are also designated for Dryopteris amplissima var. subeffusa, Aspidium macrum Fée, and Aspidium latissimum Fée.

Four new species of liverworts: Andrewsianthus chimbuensis, Lejeunea stenodentata, Plagiochila integrilobula and Radula lingulata and new localities of Mitthyridium flavum and Trichosteleum stigmosum are reported.

Bioremediation is the use of biological organisms to destroy, or reduce the hazardous wastes on a contaminated site. Bioremediation is the most potent management tool to control the environmental pollution and recover contaminated soil. Use of biological materials, coupled to other advanced processes is one of the most promising and inexpensive approaches for removing environmental pollutants. Bioremediation technology is a beneficial alternative which leads to degrade of pollutants. This article presents the important biological organisms used in bioremediation technologies.

  Abstract Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have been known for their extraordinary electrical and magnetic properties. In the present study, some transition metal oxides (Zinc oxide, iron oxide and copper oxide) which are widely used in the fabrication of electronic devices were selected and subjected to biofield treatment. The atomic and crystal structures of TMOs were carefully studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. XRD analysis reveals that biofield treatment significantly changed the lattice strain in unit cells, crystallite sizes and densities in ceramics oxide powders. The computed molecular weight of the treated samples exhibited significant variation. FT-IR spectra indicated that biofield treatment has altered the metal-oxygen bond strength. Since biofield treatment significantly altered the crystallite size, lattice strain and bond strength, we postulate that electrical and magnetic properties in TMOs (transition metal oxides) can be modulated by biofield treatment.

  Abstract Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) has gained extensive attention in solar cells due to their potential as a low-cost and earth abundant absorber material. In solar cell absorber, the optoelectrical properties such as energy band gap and absorption coefficient of Sb2S3play an important role, which have strong relationships with their crystal structure, lattice parameter and crystallite size.

Hence in the present investigation, Sb2S3 powder samples were exposed to biofield treatment, and further its physical, structural and spectral properties are investigated. The particle size analysis showed larger particle size and surface area after treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed polycrystalline orthorhombic structure with superior crystallinity in treated Sb2S3along with significant changes in the lattice parameters, which led to changes in unit cell volume and density. XRD data analysis indicates that crystallite size was increased by around 150% in treated sample. In FT-IR spectra, strong absorption band was observed at 400-700cm-1, which confirms the presence of Sb2S3. Further, the absorption peak intensity in IR spectra was significantly reduced after treatment that was probably due to change in metal sulphur dipolar interaction.

  Abstract Barium titanate, perovskite structure is known for its high dielectric constant and piezoelectric properties, which makes it interesting material for fabricating capacitors, transducer, actuator, and sensors. The perovskite crystal structure and lattice vibrations play a crucial role in its piezoelectric and ferroelectric behavior. In the present study, the barium titanate powder was subjected to biofield treatment. Further, the control and treated samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and Electron spin resonance (ESR).The XRD analysis showed the permanent compressive strain of 0.45% in treated barium titanate powder as compared to control. Furthermore, the biofield treatment had enhanced the density upto 1.38% in barium titanate as compared to control. The FT-IR spectra showed that the stretching and bending vibrations of Ti-O bond in treated BaTiO3 were shifted towards lower frequency as compared to control. The bond length was substantially increased by 0.72 % in treated BaTiO3 as compared to control. The ESR spectra of control and treated BaTiO3sample showed the g-factor of 2.0;and biofield treatment has substantially changed the width and height of ESR signal in treated BaTiO3 as compared to control. These observations revealed that biofield treatment has significantly altered the crystal structure, lattice strain,and bond vibration of barium titanate.
